Stop 8 Oni-oshidashi Lava Park: 1783 ignimbrite and lava flow, and a valley dug by the Kambara explosion

A small cliff, east end of the parking lot, exposes a tree mold formed in the welded Agatsuma ignimbrite. The movement of the pyroclastic flow did not cause tree trunks physically collapse or being bent, indicating low impact force of the flow. On the top of the Agatsuma ignimbrite, unconsolidated deposit, about 20 cm thick, of angular, glassy, dark blue andesite lapilli may be seen. This deposit is considered to represent a blast that accompanied the Kambara debris avalanche.

Looking back, a skyline is made by the Oni-oshidashi lava flow, which filled a valley about 30 m deep. The valley was dug by the violent Kambara explosion occurred at 1000 hours of 5 August 1783, however, there had already been a depression with a small pond called Yanai-numa. The explosion was probably a secondary rootless eruption, under the condition that the surface water was enclosed and superheated by the Agatsuma ignimbrite or Oni-oshidashi lava flow.

A steep cliff of the valley facing west is made of the welded Agatsuma ignimbrite, which emplaced on the previous day. Further downstream, large blocks of this welded ignimbrite are found on top of the side of the valley indicating that they were broken and tossed up to the present position during the Kambara event.
